چکیده

We discuss the advantages of an electronically steerable interferometer of a million square meters collecting area operating at cm-wavelengths as a phased array and in conjunction with other antennas in VLBI mode. With a sensitivity to μJy-level flux densities, a brightness temperature limit of TB = 10 4 K, and an expected dynamic range in future VLBI images of better than 10, the impact of SKA on the research on compact galactic and extragalactic radio sources will be virtually unpredictable, but certainly strong. In conjunction with future space VLBI missions and complementary to planned large interferometers operating at millimeter wavelengths, SKA bears the potential to revolutionize astronomy and our picture of the Universe. In this article we briefly outline the improvements expected from the use of SKA for VLBI in general. Then more specifically, we discuss the anticipated progress for the research on active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their powerful jets, emanating from hypothetical supermassive black holes. We will point out that beside a wealth of new details which SKA should reveal on jets, accretion disks and black holes, it will help to understand the relationship between the various types of active galactic nuclei (quasars & galaxies) and their cosmological evolution.

Multi-frequency Polarization Studies of AGN Jets

Throughout most of the history of radio interferometry studies of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) using VLBI, attempts to extract physically meaningful information from VLBI observations have been dominated by visibility-based approaches to analysis, such as model fitting of the self-calibrated visibility data. This approach has been extremely valuable in multi-epoch studies of superluminal motion...

Parsec-scale Jets in Extragalactic Radio Sources1

Observations of parsec-scale radio jets associated with active galactic nuclei are reviewed, with a particular emphasis on high-luminosity core-dominated sources where the most detailed information on individual objects exists. Extensive imaging surveys with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) have made possible a morphologic classification of compact radio sources and systematic studies o...

Radio Source Angular Sizes on Vlbi Scales: an Application to a Classical Cosmological Test

A novel approach to deene milliarcsecond scale angular sizes of active galactic nuclei using VLBI visibility data is presented. The \angular size{redshift" relation for a sample of nearly 250 AGN is discussed. The analysis is based on 5 GHz VLBI observations made in the VSOP pre-launch survey and various imaging observations of extremely high redshift quasars.

Using SKA to observe relativistic jets from X-ray binary systems

I briefly outline our current observational understanding of the relativistic jets observed from X-ray binary systems, and how their study may shed light on analogous phenomena in Active Galactic Nuclei and Gamma Ray Bursts. How SKA may impact on this field is sketched, including the routine tracking of relativistic ejections to large distances from the binaries, detecting and monitoring the ra...

The Role of Millimeter VLBI Observations in AGN Research

VLBI at millimeter wavelengths (mm-VLBI) allows the detailed imaging of compact galactic and extragalactic radio sources with micro-arcsecond scale resolution, unaccessible by other observing techniques. Here we discuss the scientific potential of mm-VLBI for present and future research on 'Active Galactic Nuclei' (AGN) and their powerful relativistic jets. With the new generation of large radi...
